How will Standards Based Grading (SBG) increase student understanding and learning in my classroom?
By moving to SBG, students would know exactly what they are expected to learn in my classroom. Students would also be expected to play an active role in the tracking of their progress allowing them to know where they are in their progress towards understanding a topic. Finally, they should easily be able to articulate their needs.
What happens if a student fails a test?
Students will be given the information they will be tested over at the beginning of each unit. Prior to a test, I will let me students know what they will be tested on; I will not give pop quizzes. If a student takes a test and does poorly, then they can fill out an insurance form and will have the ability to retake all or part of the test.
How will homework be graded?
Homework is an important part of the student's ability to master the information. Although it is not graded, completing the homework will help the student to better understand the tested material. If a student chooses not to complete the homework, they may be required to stay after school until it has been completed.
A student's ability to complete homework on time is an important part of the learning process. I often check for understanding or go over the homework the next day. If a student does not complete homework this may affect the behavior part of their grade, but not their accedemic part.
How does this align to the district’s Strategic Plan?
In general the district’s guiding philosophy is continuous improvement. This idea is one that is ingrained in all that I do in my classroom. The district’s core values include a focus on data and results, learning for all, and visionary leadership. Moving towards SBG will allow me to use data from the student’s learning to achieve increased learning for all. In addition, this request shows individual leadership to work towards innovative learning practices. SBG will also help the district to work towards the goals to utilize exemplary professional practices and improve performance in my curricular area, eventually expanding to all curricular areas. Finally, SBG will increase family and community support for learning by increasing the communication about learning.
Would there be a way to show students who have gone above proficient?
I am using a four point rubric with three representing proficient in the skill. Students who are at a three, would be allowed to work on enrichment activities, or if available move forward in their studies.
How would this look in the grade book?
Links to the rubrics used to assess the student’s success are attached to each of the grades. I would plan on using a four point rubric with three representing proficient in the skill. In Formative Assessment & Standards-Based Grading, Marzano explains that grades from all assessments should be accessed at all times. He also suggests that they should not be counted in the summative grade. In my grade book, each assessment will be included, but only a summative grade will count towards their final grade.
Are there other places I can go to get additional information?
